Note I said cell phones and not “cells”. Their very name is number one on the list of things about them that make me nuts. Most people don’t see a problem with sentences like, “Do you have a cell?” The word cell is defined as:

1. a small room, as in a convent or prison.
2. any of various small compartments or bounded areas forming part of a whole.
3. a small group acting as a unit within a larger organization: a local cell of the Communist party.
4. Biology. a usually microscopic structure containing nuclear and cytoplasmic material enclosed by a semipermeable membrane and, in plants, a cell wall; the basic structural unit of all organisms.

The Panasonic HDC-DX1 is one of the latest in the new wave of high definition digital video cameras. Recording to mini-DVD and utilising the AVCHD format via a 3CCD sensor, the camera is clearly geared towards high level users. However, it still manages to remain fairly competitive in its pricing. Great image quality and vibrant colours are at the top of the list of great features on the DX1, however it does suffer from an awkward design, and bare manual feature-set.

Image quality is the biggest advantage of the DX1 over a non-HD camera. Delivering 1080i resolution images, video shot on the camera looks smooth and sharp with very little blurring or image noise, even in high motion shots. Colour reproduction is excellent, thanks largely to the 3CCD sensor. If anything, we found the colours to be a little oversaturated, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It makes video look brighter and more vivid, and is common in most digital video cameras. The camera also has a 12x optical zoom which may be lacking for some, although digital zoom is available up to 700x.

Using software pre-loaded on the phones, subscribers of Blogger.com will be able to update their personal blogs from their mobile phones. Sony Ericsson claims it is the first company to offer an integrated blogging tool on its phones.

“We are seeing exponential growth in blogging, and consumers are turning more and more often to the Internet as a means of sharing information or images in personal blogs,” Jan Wareby, corporate executive vice president for Sony Ericsson, said in a statement. “By working with Google, we’re able to offer a quick and easy way for people to blog as they discover how convenient it is as a way to share words and pictures with friends, family and beyond.”

The point is that the functionality will be there, it’ll simply be a matter of getting providers to support the initiative. Who knows maybe one of our providers will see fit to endorse the idea as a cute value-add to their offerings.

The 1.8 firmware saga continues! Everyone is waiting anxiously for the 2.0 update, but to be honest, this update has been fun to play around with!

First, we learned that when the PSP gets its update next month, the PS3 will stream media to it anywhere you have an internet connection. Good news, but there’s nothing we can do with it right now. Also, it added upscaling support for your old DVDs and Playstation 1 & 2 games.

Secondly, we found that the PS3 fully supports music and photo streaming from Windows Media Player 11’s media sharing feature. Awesome! A few caveats though; still no AVI support, no WMV support, and no lossless WMA support.

The first thing to consider when buying a GPS device is its primary use. Will you be using it on the road, on the trail, or on the water?

On the road devices are usually temporary mounted in the vehicle with suction cups or bean bags. Most of these devices have turn-by-turn instructions and auto correction if you miss a turn.

We recommend getting a device with the auto-correction feature, that way you don’t have to mess with the device if you take a wrong turn, it will recalculate the route for you automatically.

After all, the press release was issued back in January at CES and missed by nearly everyone, including us. Well, Philips certainly cares and aims to celebrate by dishing out a triplet of Ambilight LCDs ranging size from 42-, 47-, and 52-inches. As you’d expect, they’ve got all the sweetest buzzwords covered: 1080p, 120Hz, LED backlighting. They also feature Philips’ Perfect Pixel HD processing engine, plenty of HDMI inputs (3x on the 52-incher)…
